Chapter Twenty-One

Work at the Advance Area never really came to a complete halt; they just quit using the heavy equipment and the band and chainsaws at around dinner time. There was simply too much to do before the entire Armory needed to be moved out here. They spent the majority of the daylight hours cutting down trees, pulling stumps and leveling ground using the equipment that would keep everyone up all night. They spent the night erecting tents, running wires for, of all things electricity and communications within the encampment cum city, and a myriad of other tasks that could be done ‘quietly’. It was amazing what the human mind could decide quiet meant, too; though being exhausted probably didn’t hurt.

The initial advance area had included almost twenty acres in an oddly shaped patch about a third of a mile due west of the lake. It had been the best area ‘in a pinch’, but it had still had problems; those problems being two-fold. The first problem was the odd shape, and sticking out here and there and going off in odd directions elsewhere. The second problem wasn’t quite as bad, but was still there, and that was the flatness or lack thereof of the land.

There had been enough good, flat area to set up the original advance party without any trouble, but additional people had actually meant a substantial amount of grading. The introduction of an additional 30+ semis, on top of all the vehicles from the Armory really had made for the beginnings of a headache for Ramirez. Parking lots were a pain in the butt for a number of reasons, as anyone who’d had to put one together in the woods could attest to.

They had to be more than relatively flat and the larger the vehicle, the more flat it needed to be. They needed to have good drainage if they were going to be used for any length of time, as a mud pit didn’t work real great if you had to move the vehicles or egress. The lot had to have access to get the vehicles in and out, and again, the larger the vehicle, the more ‘dead space’ you had to leave open to maneuver the vehicles. And last but certainly not least, the thing that pissed him off the most right now, the lot itself was dead space that couldn’t be used for anything else, and it was space that would have held tents or other semi-permanent structures. Now it was going to hold trucks.

“How are the 6x6’s coming?” Ramirez asked to the group currently manning the mill saw. It looked like two E4s and three civilians, but with everyone wearing clothing from the Armory stores, it was actually a little hard to tell sometimes, especially covered in sawdust and with everyone wearing t-shirts instead of BDU blouses.

“Not too bad, so far Sgt. Now that we’ve got a little bit of experience with the saws we’re not making nearly as much firewood as we were.
